The goal of this method is to calm the mind and escape from our stressors, from the constant state of the fight or flight response and into the relaxation response. Through the efforts of each asana, a meditation in motion, is where we shift from thinking to feeling. Thinking consumes energy and feeling conserves it. Too much thinking is causing a brain drain where our minds are literally being fried with stress.
With the relaxation response our stress hormones begin to dissolve and are replaced with happy hormones: dopamines, melatonin and serotonin, thus allowing our immune system to function at peak efficiency, instantly writing a prescription for whatever might ail us.
The therapeutic yoga based on Dr. Bali’s method is a Hatha yoga based practice and is for all levels as it is encouraged to listen to your body and go at your own pace.
We incorporate movement as a means to help focus the mind in the body, to help to calm the mental chatter. So it’s a lot of slow movement, the way you’d see in Qigong or Tai Chi. That internal dialogue is what creates a lot of our suffering so we try to redirect the energy and attention away from the mind and into the body/breath.
As we go through the asanas and deep breathing, our guts are being decongested and metabolic wastes are being dislodged helping to cleanse our bodies and at the same time our circulation is being promoted to help nourish, rebuild, renew & repair ourselves from the inside out.
The whole routine is mostly done on our mats, lights low.
Much of the intention in this practice is to release pent up emotions, to move towards accepting ourselves the way we are, versus trying to achieve a better version of ourselves. Not to say that we can’t move forward but just that we try to get there more from a place of love versus fear.
The practice can get intense as we go into shoulder stands and other more intense postures, but the most important part of the practice is meeting yourself where you are and going at your own pace, without expectation or judgment.
During this practice we teach you Kapalbhati breathing (pumping of the breath) in order to decongest the gut area and emotional processing center.
We do meditation between postures as a way of allowing for absorption and assimilation. Our ultimate goal is to tap into our own inner pharmacy, into our relaxation response, this is where deep healing takes place.
